YOUTH PROGRAMS SPECIAL EVENTS

One City Marathon-
Kids (both young and old) can dash one nautical mile (1.15mi) through the streets of Newport News, and finish in front of onlookers at the Victory Arch. Parents may choose to run with their child if he or she needs help staying on course or is under 4 years old. Otherwise, we encourage you to stay at the start / finish line area to get great pictures! This is an awesome event and next years date should be announced soon.

Parents Night Out -
This is a great way for parents to rekindle the flame while giving their kids a safe, fun environment to play in for the evening. Our various locations host PNO's at least once a month during the school year and they run from 6:30 pm-9:30 pm and have a range of activities from arts and crafts, sports games, and movies! Dinner is included with the price.

Spring Fling-
This event runs in April and is hosted at the Brittingham-Midtown and Denbigh Community Centers. The cost is $22/day if registered in advance or $27/day if registered the day of the program. The event has daily programming activities consisting of recreation, creative thinking, and more so that your child can be consumed with fun during their spring break. This program is geared towards consistent activity so that down time is kept to a minimum and the brain is on high alert for all of the fantastic fun that takes place on a daily basis. The program runs from 6:00 am-6:30 pm. This event culminates with our 'Kickin' For The Cause' charity event!

Summer Camp-
Youth Programs consolidates during the summer and runs roughly half the locations that we do during the school year. However, we also extend our hours to a full day of care! We'll make the days go by so fast your kids will be back in school before you know it. We continue to do everything that you have come to expect from our programs including weekly themed activities, sports and recreation, and leisure activities. Making sure to keep the 'summer' in our name, we also have a host of field trips to keep the fun moving along including trips to Busch Gardens, The Children's Museum, Suffolk Train Station, The Spirit of Norfolk and Newport News Park among others. We know that you have options during the summer; but, we know you'll love our program! Come check us out! Registration begins April 24th.

Lights-On Afterschool
Lights-On Afterschool is celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities. In America today, 1 in 4 youth -- 15.1 million children – are alone and unsupervised after school. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. They provide opportunities to help young people develop into successful adults. Lights On Afterschool was launched in October 2000 with celebrations in 1,200 communities nationwide.  The following year 3,600 events took place.  Today, more than 7,500 Lights-On Afterschool rallies are held annually, attracting 1 million Americans and media coverage nationwide. Lights-On Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable afterschool programs. Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has served as Chair of Lights On Afterschool since 2001.  Thank you to Paragon City Center 12 for sponsoring the 2016 Lights On Afterschool celebration on October 20th, 2016.

Disability Awareness Day-
Disability Awareness Day (D.A.D.) was established in October of 1990 out of a need to highlight the capabilities of persons with disabilities. The City of Newport News' Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department has been serving citizens with disabilities since 1973 and has made a commitment to further the public awareness of their talents, services in the community, and concerns. Patrick Henry Mall has been a staunch supporter and co-sponsor from the very beginning. Countless individuals and agencies have volunteered their time over the years to make this event an annual reality.
